The White-tailed eagle is one of the most impressive birds of prey of the Netherlands. And how great it is that this specie breeds in the Netherlands for the first time (ever of since centuries, who knows?)! And this incredible bird, called the flying door because of its 2 meter wingspan, is seen very regularely on the island where I live, Voorne Putten. I even saw one once flying over Spijkenisse, accompanied by four or five Buzzards.

In 2006 the first nest was discovered in the Oostvaardersplassen, in 2011 a couple nested in the Biesbosch and  subadult couples can be seen around the Haringvliet lately!

Field characteristics

Young birds are brown with a dark bill, a stained chest and dark tail. As the bird grows up, which takes five years, the tail becomes white, the head and neck grow lighter and the bill becomes yellow.

Sound:

A high, gull-like yapping sound
