Blog Great spotted woodpecker

Last year I was just a day too late. My nephew Koen told me there was a Great spotted woodpecker in the park in front of their house with youngsters, but when I finally had the time to drop by, the birds had flown.


Young Great spotted woodpecker. With it's size and red cap, it can easily be mistaken for a Middle spotted woodpecker.

Blog sterns EN

One of the fun parts of birding is that you come in many different places. I always enjoy our beautiful country. So also this time near Alblasserdam, next to Kinderdijk. For most Dutch and tourists mainly known for the windmills. Today I saw lots of Japanese, French, Italians, English and Germans. But most of them had no eye for what I came for: The White-winged black tern that stayed for almost a week between the Black terns there.

Blog Tree sparrow

Last year we had a couple of Great tits in the nest box in our garden> They didn't bother any visitors while feeding the youngsters. Unfortunately it didn't end happy for those little ones, because right after leaving the save nest, they became lunch for a couple of Magpies :-(

This year the nest box has other visitors, that are much more carefull aproaching the nest. I'm curious to see if the Magpies are aware of the opportunity. Hope not!
